A Real Song to Life!

There are patron saints for every cause and activity. There are saints with different backgrounds and stories. Today, I would like to share with you the life of a woman who was an ordinary wife and mother, a dedicated medical doctor who lived a fulfilling life.

Gianna Beretta, was born in Milan, Italy in 1922. She was a wife, a mother and pediatrician always eager to give witness to the Gospel. She married Pietro Molla and had three beautiful children. In 1961, she became pregnant for the fourth time, but this time she had a more complicated pregnancy (her other three pregnancies were also difficult). A fibroma was growing in her uterus, the doctors gave her three options: to remove her whole uterus, to have an abortion or to have the fibroid surgically removed and risk the continuation of her pregnancy, which was the option St. Gianna chose. As a doctor herself she was aware of all the risks that her decision implied. She told her husband Pietro "If you have to decide between me and the child, do not hesitate; I demand it, the child, save him." The surgery went well and Gianna Emanuela was born, but seven days after St. Gianna died after a painful septic peritonitis. She was 39 years old.

She always wanted to love Christ and live accordingly to the Gospel. She gave witness to Christ during her whole life. She was a very active person who liked the outdoors and sports. She loved her family and her profession. At the Mass for her canonization, Pope John Paul II said "The extreme sacrifice she sealed with her life testifies that only those who have the courage to devote their lives totally to God and to others are able to fulfill themselves." He also defined her heroic witness as "a real song to life.”

These are the words of her daughter Gianna Emanuela who followed her mother’s footsteps in the medical field, today she is a geriatric doctor:

"Dear Mom, thank you for having given me life two times: when you conceived me and when you permitted me to be born… My life seeks to be the natural continuation of your life, of your joy of living, of your enthusiasm, and it finds its full meaning in the engagement and dedication to whoever lives in suffering. Dear Mom, intercede always for all mothers and all families who turn to you and entrust themselves to you."

Let us pray that we may always follow her example to be courageous, to give witness to Christ in our daily lives and in a special way, in difficult moments. Let us pray that Saint Gianna may intercede for all struggling families and for women who may have been counseled to have an abortion to choose life. Let us ask her intercession for the healing of all women who have gone through the painful path of abortion.
